For beginner readers and spellers

Nelson Phonics Workbook 1 introduces beginner readers to early phonological awareness skills and early phonics instruction.

Nelson Phonics Workbook 1 targets:

• syllable awareness – developing the student’s awareness of the syllabic structure of words
• onset-rime awareness – developing the student’s awareness of the intra-syllabic level of words and allows students to work with rhyme
• letters and sounds of the alphabet – encompassing traditional phonics teaching of the letters ‘a’ to ‘z’ and the sounds they make. Letters are introduced in a sequence familiar to many teachers
• digraphs ‘ch’, ‘th’, ‘sh’ – the high frequency single sounds that are represented by two letter graphemes.
