 Senior Graphic Designer -Secondary (Maternity Leave Contract -12 months)

Cengage Learning is seeking a Senior Graphic Designer for a 12 month maternity leave contract. Reporting to the Lead Senior Designer, this fulltime position has responsibility for managing the design workload for the secondary division’s publishing program, in collaboration with another senior graphic designer.

Duties include assigning, briefing, and art directing freelance designers, illustrators and photographers, and monitoring technical accuracy and quality of all work. You will be responsible for the delivery of contemporary ideas, on time and to budget according to design standards and processes for the Secondary publishing division. You will take ownership and control at all stages of the projects design and be able to understand and communicate this to the publishing team.

The successful applicant will have a graphic design degree, several years conceptual and art directing experience preferably in the book publishing industry, good knowledge of prepress and publishing workflow, and demonstrated use of Mac OSX, InDesign CS4, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. Excellent communication and organisational skills, and the ability to manage to deadlines is essential.

• negotiating with suppliers including printers and compositors
• weekly reporting

• ensuring production guidelines are understood and adhered to
• creating print estimates

• proven project management experience
• your ability to think laterally and creatively
• an understanding of production process
• multi tasking and time management skills
• experience using Windows Excel, Word, Outlook and FileMaker Pro
• your analytical and problem solving abilities
• attention to detail
